What is counselling?
Counselling is a talking therapy to help you explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe and confidential space. It’s ideal for working through any problems that you might be experiencing in your life or exploring how you got to where you are now and exploring how you might like that to change.
How long does counselling take to work?
Counselling sessions usually take place once a week, for 50 minutes. At Reset Mind, you can have as little or as many sessions as you need. Generally, at least six sessions work well to allow time to build trust, so you can discuss things more freely.
What happens in the first counselling session?
Your counsellor will begin by introducing themselves, establishing boundaries for the sessions and telling you about the way they work.
You’ll run through an initial consultation to find out more about you, why you’re considering therapy and what you’d like to work on. If you’re not sure what it is yet, don’t worry, I will help you work that out.
Feel free to ask me anything you want to know about how things will work in each session and what is expected of you.
What happens in the following sessions?
Your counsellor will help you work out what you’d like to focus on. It will mostly be conversational and led by you, your counsellor will listen but may ask you questions that may help you to uncover certain aspects of life that may be linked to the issue such as your childhood or your relationships with friends and family. You’ll be given the space to explore your thoughts, emotions, behaviour and topics that you find difficult. If you have a specific issue, your counsellor can focus on these with you and might suggest using some other techniques such as Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you process things and make changes you wish to make in your life.
Sometimes there may be silences and that’s ok as it gives you both time to think. It’s also ok to feel a little uncertain about speaking to someone you’ve only just met, but don’t worry, after a session or two this feels fine.
