What is Teen Counselling?
Teen counselling (sometimes called adolescent counselling) provides a safe, supportive, and confidential space for young people to explore their thoughts and feelings. Counselling can help teenagers and young adults understand their emotions, cope with challenges, and improve relationships with family, friends, and peers.
Reasons young people may need counselling include:
-
Problems at school, college, or home
-
Difficulty making or keeping friendships
-
Bullying or peer pressure
-
Major life changes, e.g., school changes, parental separation, bereavement
Through counselling, your young person can:
-
Explore what’s happening in their life and how it feels
-
Learn coping and problem-solving skills
-
Understand their feelings and actions better
-
Improve emotional stability and confidence
My Experience with Young People
I have supported young people in a variety of settings, including:
-
YMCA Norfolk – Youth Mental Health Service, preventing referrals to CAMHS
-
YMCA Norfolk – Counselling disadvantaged young people in crisis
-
St Edmund’s Society – Alternative learning environments for teens with educational challenges
-
NHS Talking Therapies – Supporting 16+ young people presenting with depression
How I Work With Teenagers
I work alongside your teenage child or young adult to:
-
Teach problem-solving and coping skills
-
Provide talking therapy, creative therapy, or structured approaches (Interpersonal Therapy, CBT, psychoeducation)
-
Support stress management, emotional regulation, and self-esteem
Parents or caregivers can join the first session or last if the young person agrees. Teens can also attend independently. Post-session, there may be optional tasks to continue learning or practicing between sessions which the parent can support with if the young person agrees.
